Independent Study
Updated policy for 2025-2026 school year:
While we understand that travel and time away from school can be meaningful, Independent Study cannot fully replicate the classroom experience—especially when it comes to collaboration, discussion, and hands-on learning. Students miss key instructional moments that are difficult to recover. Last year alone, 74 students across our three schools participated in Independent Study, resulting in 470 total days of missed in-person instruction. In a district of our size, that level of absence has a real impact—not only on individual student progress, but also on classroom continuity and school morale.
To support students’ academic and social growth, we are asking families to reserve Independent Study requests for true emergencies or exceptional circumstances. Starting this school year, requests will only be considered with at least five school days’ advance notice and will not be approved for vacations. Requests must be made by emailing your school principal, the classroom or homeroom teacher, and the school secretary. We strongly encourage families to schedule travel during school breaks. Absences for vacation during the school year will be marked as unexcused, and students will be responsible for making up any missed classwork.
Thank you for supporting your child’s learning and helping us ensure every student has the best opportunity to succeed.
Independent Study is governed by Education Code sections 51745-51749.3 and by District Board Policy 6158. Independent Study is an optional educational alternative that students/parents voluntarily select. Independent study must be requested no less than five (5) school days prior to absence. In the case of unforeseen emergencies, independent study may be approved by the principal with less than 5 days’ notice. Independent study will not be approved for students missing the first or last days of the school year.
